Silvertown - the domain of Gottfried Silbermann, the world-famous Saxon organ-building. The largest Silbermann organ, in the Cathedral in Freiberg, is not only the most important of the 30 surviving organs built by the master craftsman, it is also considered the best-sounding in the world, melting in inspired fashion both French and Saxon tone elements. Freiberg Cathedral is among the most beautiful Late Gothic hall churches in the Upper Saxon region. Its Golden Portal, the ornate tulip pulpit and the magnificent burial crypt of the Protestant Wettin princes are each in themselves worth a visit.
Silver was found in Freiberg in 1168 - the beginning of the silver rush in the Erzgebirge Mountains! In the centuries which followed, Freiberg became a centre of mining, indeed the economic focus of the whole Saxon region. Without Freiberg, we would today no doubt be missing many a palace, many an art collection, and many a gem of architectural mastery.
